Overview

The General English (GE) course has been designed with the goal of improving student’s English (reading, writing, listening and speaking) so they can continue into Tertiary/Higher Level Education or to speak confidently in an English-speaking workplace/every day social environment.

The course is made up of modules which cover: Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening skills.

The modules are taught at 6 levels of difficulty.

  1. Elementary
  2. Pre-intermediate
  3. Intermediate
  4. Upper-intermediate
  5. EAP 1
  6. EAP 2

Elementary (IELTS Equivalence: Entry Level 2.5 – 3.5/ Expected Outcome 4)

At this stage, you will be able to participate in short social exchanges and understand frequently used expressions. You will focus on:

  • Expanding vocabulary on familiar topics
  • Forming basic questions and sentences
  • Understanding short texts and conversations
  • Speaking about the past and future in simple terms

Pre-Intermediate (IELTS Equivalence: Entry Level 4 – 4.5/ Expected Outcome 5)

This level prepares you for more independent communication. You will:

  • Communicate more confidently in everyday situations
  • Understand the main points of clear standard speech
  • Read and write simple texts with some accuracy
  • Develop your grammar to include different tenses and more complex structures

Intermediate (IELTS Equivalence: Entry Level 5/ Expected Outcome 5.5)

At this level, you begin to use English more fluently and flexibly. You will:

  • Express opinions and ideas on familiar topics
  • Understand the main ideas of longer texts and discussions
  • Write structured paragraphs and short essays
  • Improve accuracy in grammar and pronunciation

Upper Intermediate (IELTS Equivalence: Entry Level 5.5/ Expected Outcome 6)

This level prepares you for academic study or professional environments. You will:

  • Participate effectively in discussions and presentations
  • Read and understand academic and technical texts
  • Write essays and reports with clarity and coherence
  • Develop critical thinking and formal writing skills

EAP 1 (IELTS Equivalence: Entry Level 6/ Expected Outcome 6.5)

 This course is designed for students who are close to meeting university English language requirements. It focuses on:

  • Academic reading and listening skills
  • Essay writing and referencing techniques
  • Advanced grammar skills
  • Building vocabulary for study and research

Completing EAP 1 can lead to progression into EAP 2 or an undergraduate program (depending on your target course).

EAP 2 (IELTS Equivalence: Entry Level 6.5/ Expected Outcome 7)

 This advanced course is for students preparing to enter a degree program, or higher. It includes:

  • Reading academic texts critically
  • Writing extended essays and reports
  • Taking part in seminars and debates
  • Research and referencing skills at university level

Duration

Depending upon their proven English language ability, students may commence their studies at either any one of the following levels most appropriate to their English levels (each level is 12 Weeks including 2 weeks break):


  • Elementary (entry IELTS 2.5-3.5 or equivalent)
  • Pre-intermediate (entry IELTS 4- 4.5 or equivalent)
  • Intermediate (entry IELTS 5 or equivalent)
  • Upper Intermediate (entry IELTS 5.5 or equivalent)
  • EAP 1 (entry IELTS 6 or equivalent)
  • EAP 2 (entry IELTS 6.5 or equivalent)
  • Total course duration per level is 12 weeks (including breaks) and students may enrol in part of the course. Course is delivered over 2.5 days per week.
  • Students can change their level based on Salford College regular testing
  • Students must attend a minimum of 20 hours per week
